Feeling the truck shaking from one end to another, you wondered why in the world you chose the bumpy dirt road over any other road.
"Because it's the fastest way, of course!" your Canadian friend kept on replying.
You rolled your eyes, tired of hearing the exact same thing. It was the beginning of April and you and your friend Matthew had traveled up to Ootsa Lake in British Columbia to watch the northern lights. It was a dream of yours! And Mattie, being the generous guy he is, proposed some sort of road trip, which you accepted with delight.
But there was a downside: You had to drive through the thick Canadian forest in order to get there. And so far, it had almost been 3 hours since you last set foot on land.
This is getting long...
Matthew insisted he used his good ol' pick up, since he knew the area rather well and said that there was going to be a lot of dirt.
The sun had set hours ago and all you could do now is stare out your window and watch the numerous amount of pine trees pass by.
When you were about to ask the Are we there yet? question, Matthew slammed on his breaks, making you gasp. You noticed the change in environment, considering that instead of being surrounded by trees, a vast lake stood before you. Not to mention a couple of mountains on your right and left side.
"We're here, ________!" His tone seemed rather cheerful and excited, which shocked you a lot since you knew he was a very shy boy and kept quiet most of the time.
Nonetheless, that did not stop him from pouncing out of the pick up truck and dashing towards your own door. He opened it quickly and with ease before grabbing your hand and dragging you towards the edge of the cliff he had parked on.
You giggled and followed him to where he wanted to go. When he finally made a halt, his eyes grew wider followed by his smile. You had to admit, the view was absolutely beautiful, not to mention breathtaking.
The sun was long gone and the stars seemed to be shining with all of their might. The sky was of a dark shade of violet and the slightly cool breeze caressed both of your faces, making his golden hair and your (h/c) locks dance in the wind.
You felt so peaceful. Closing your eyes, you tried to block out the world while you enjoyed this blissful silence. That silence didn't last long.
"Y-You want me to take out the blankets for us to lie down on?" Matthew shyly proposed while tapping you on the shoulder lightly.
You thought for a moment before nodding in approval.
"Sure! Just let me go get my sweater in the truck." You said before sprinting towards the truck's back seat and taking out your little vest.
Why did I even bring this thing? I should have known it was going to be much colder out here! I guess I'll have to remember that next time.
You scolded yourself mentally, feeling the cold winds pick up.
When you stepped outside the pick up, Mattie had already organized the blankets you were going to sit on in the back of his truck.
Man, he's quick!
You also noticed he slipped on his favorite dark red hoodie, making him look even cuter than before.
Lucky, he must be really warm in that...
Shivering a bit, you made your way towards him before jumping in next to him. After making yourself comfortable, you brought your legs up to your chest. It was getting colder by the second and you tried to hide the trembling of your body.
Matthew was simply stargazing, not aware of your current state. Until he heard you sneeze, that is. His head wiped around, only to find you shaking from head to toe. His eyes filled with concern before placing his gentle hand on your knee.
"_______, you alright there?"
You looked up at him and smiled weakly, nodding vigorously.
He frowned and scooted over closer to you, making you blush a bit.
"I don't believe that. You're freezing, _______. Don't you have something bigger than that tiny coat?" His violet eyes locked with your (e/c) ones.
"N-No, not really... But I-I'm fine! I can assure you!" You tried your best to keep up with the Oh no, I'm totally fine! Don't worry about me! act. But Matthew was smarter than that and did not buy any of it.
And in a matter of seconds, he was taking off his own hoodie. You were about to protest but he had already started to slip it over your head. Now here you were, snuggling with Mattie in his favorite red hoodie while he sat there in his white t-shirt.
Although the newly found warmth felt good, you couldn't just leave him there to freeze his butt off!
"Mattie, you didn't have to do that! You're going to die of hypothermia or something!"
He chuckled and looked down at his legs.
"T-Then I guess you'll just have to keep me warm..." He gulped and quickly looked away, realizing what he had just said and blushing furiously. But he was determined to finally do it.
"Wha-" You were cut off by his arms wrapping around your waist and pulling you extremely close to him, making the free space between you two vanish.
He buried his head in the crook of your neck and in your hair, still trying to hide his blushing face.
Your eyes widened at his sudden action but you quietly chuckled to yourself while your own arms made their way around his body. He obviously wasn't expecting you to hug him back, but seeing as you did so, he smiled and closed his eyes.
"You're really warm, you know that?" He whispered, the sound of his voice muffled by his own hoodie.
You nodded silently and hugged him closer.
"You're pretty warm yourself, Mattie."
You both laughed and parted a bit, giving you enough space to look into one another's eyes. The tips of your noses were touching and you brought your hand up to his face in order to push away an annoying strand of golden hair so you could get a better look at his gleaming eyes. His warm breath was tempting, inviting you to feel the warmness of his lips even more.
His two hands cupped your face perfectly, giving him absolute access to your mouth. And with that thought, he leaned in slowly before smashing his soft lips against yours. He could feel you smirking, which made his heart flutter.
You kissed back with the same intensity before moving your hands from around his torso to around his neck and into his hair. You noticed how much his lips tasted like maple syrup, which you did not question at all.
You were no longer concerned about his hoodie, for you knew he had all the heat he needed right now.
When he finally broke the kiss, you couldn't help but notice his glasses slowly sliding off of his nose. With one finger, you pushed them back to their rightful place.
You both chuckled before a ray of light appeared from out of no where in the sky. Matthew looked up first and smiled.
"_______, look." He pointed to above your head, gesturing you to look up as well.
You did as you were told, only to be greeted by dozens and dozens of northern lights, their colors varying from the lightest shades of blue to the softest shades of pink. They swirled and moved with such grace, you could of sworn they almost looked like colorful ocean waves in the sky.
You both watched them in amazement, admiring their beauty from your little spot behind the pick up truck.
"Hey, _______?" Matthew whispered after a few minutes of silence.
He pecked your forehead before resting his chin on top of your head.
"I love you."
You snuggled more into his chest and gripped the fabric of his white t-shirt with your fingers.
"I love you more."
